Dave.
David Issac Hecht is, more often than not, the guy who always seems to know where that thing is—that missing piece of something you need to make your vision real. None of us know how, but he nevertheless unfailingly can show you what it is and where to find it. Dave is an architect, archivist, activist, designer, tinkerer, thinker, technologist, maker, librarian, and amateur ecologist.
With a background that spans from studying cognitive science to office and operations management to an architecture degree from Columbia GSAPP, he delights in bringing his own unique brand of interdisciplinarity to projects with an unceasing, energetic earnesty that is as creativity-inducing as it is conscientious. He is a steadfast advocate for labor rights, social justice, sustainability, neurodiversity, and a variety of other worthwhile causes. He delights in facilitation, visioning, connecting, and apprenticing in things he does not know in order that he may learn how to do them. You can often find Dave fabricating things for the building, maintaining the Cybernetics Library, or salvaging something cool for the Resource Library.
He is also one of the longest serving cooperative members (having joined all the way back in 2018, just a few months after the guildhall officially opened) and he demonstrates his care for this project through his countless facilities-related rescues, jumping in to provide support on a vast array of member projects, and facilitating member involvement via our board of directors.
Dave has supported guildmates with a mind-boggling breadth of know-that and know-how, but just to name a few: whether you need to safely operate a miter saw, navigate the rich array of texts of the Cybernetics library, or are hoping an intellectual sparring partner on esoteric topics from [FILL ME IN] to [FILL ME IN], this is your guy.
“Surfer Dave”
You'll sometimes hear Dave referred to as "Surfer Dave." Although Dave may or may not know how to surf IRL (a mystery to this day), this is actually a reference to a superhero devised by our Doodle Force kids, who created the uncanny resemblance to a certain real life Dave during a superhero concept design session at the guildhall. Surfer Dave, superhero, surfs the galaxy on a rising crest of useful stuff!
